Berlin (AP) - Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has defended the decision to open hair salons earlier.

"It also has something to do with - for some - hygiene, but also with dignity in these difficult times," said Söder after the federal-state consultations on Wednesday evening in Berlin.

For many people, hair salons played an important role in the pandemic in order to find themselves again.

Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) also advocates preferential treatment for hairdressers.

"I'm amazed at some of the debates about how big the role hairdressers play," said Müller.

For hygienic reasons, however, many people simply need support - similar to foot care.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) agreed on Wednesday with the country chiefs that hairdressers can reopen on March 1st, regardless of the lockdown extension, provided that hygiene requirements are strictly observed.
