Essen (dpa / lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian building minister Ina Scharrenbach (CDU) has warned of rising costs for tenants due to the planned amendment to the telecommunications law.

"I hope that the Federal Council develops the strength to oppose the government's request to drive up rents for millions of underprivileged households," said Scharrenbach of the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung ("WAZ" / Wednesday ).

The background: The federal government wants to delete the so-called “levy privilege” in the telecommunications law.

So far, the landlord has been able to pass on TV costs - mostly for cable TV - to all tenants.

So the tenants have to pay even if they don't want the TV connection.

This has the advantage that the costs per household are relatively low at eight to ten euros per month - after all, the network operators have lower administrative costs than with contracts with individual households.

Roughly speaking, individual contracts cost twice as much on the market.

Proponents of the new regulation, on the other hand, point out that more and more tenants receive TV via the Internet, DVB-T2 or satellite, or no longer have a TV at all.

The automatism that cable fees can be passed on to the rent is therefore no longer appropriate.

The controversial topic is on the agenda of the Federal Council on Friday.

Scharrenbach clearly criticized the plans of Federal Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU): "On the one hand, politics cannot constantly philosophize about affordable housing and, on the other hand, drive rents up through laws."
