Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg is set to be the venue for a special marathon event on April 11.

Under the motto “The fastest way to Tokyo”, around 100 international runners are to be given the opportunity to meet the standard for the Olympic Games in July in the Japanese metropolis.

As the organizers announced on Wednesday, the run should take place on a 10.5-kilometer circuit under the strictest hygiene regulations.

In addition to the international athletes, ten German runners are expected to take part in Anke Esser, Fabienne Königstein, the sisters Debbie and Rabea Schöneborn, Katharina Steinruck, Arne Gabius, Tom Gröschel, Philipp Pflieger, Hendrik Pfeifer and Richard Ringer.

"Even in these times we would like to do everything possible to offer athletes a chance for a marathon competition," said co-organizer Jos Hermens.

"In this case it is very special because it is a qualification for the Olympic Games."
