Wolfsburg / Hamburg (dpa) - At Volkswagen, the plans to set up their own corona vaccination centers are becoming more specific.

On Wednesday, the company switched some processes in the existing virus test facilities to digital processes so that the appropriate capacities are available in the event of participation in the vaccination campaign.

"One of the reasons is that we want to create human resources now, with a view to the possibility that we could become part of the German vaccination strategy," said the head of corporate health in the VW Group, Lars Nachbar.

In December, his colleague Katharina Bruderek, who is responsible for the main plant in Wolfsburg, reported on the intermediate status of the preparations.

Vaccination centers could therefore also be set up on the premises of other Volkswagen locations - but one would have to wait for more precise guidelines from the federal government, it said at the time.

Coordination with the health authorities had already been initiated.

VW has carried out around 25,000 corona tests on its workforce since the summer.

Login data can now be entered via the network or an app, and the results can also be queried digitally.

Ways to vaccinate as quickly as possible are discussed in various industries.

"We need a long-term strategy to promote vaccination protection for the population," said Ralf Becker, the head of the northern district of the industrial union for mining, chemicals and energy (IG BCE).

"For example, it would make sense if companies could offer their employees vaccination protection from company doctors."

The employers' association Chemie-Nord called on employees to get vaccinated immediately as soon as enough doses are available.

"Of course, the vaccination is not an immediate free ticket," says Managing Director Jochen Wilkens.

"But it is an extremely important step towards a more carefree time without Corona."
