Berlin (dpa) - The lockdown to contain the corona pandemic, which has been in force since mid-December, has saved many people's lives, according to the Berlin Prime Minister Michael Müller (SPD).

The positive infection development in the past few weeks did not come by itself, but the result of the anti-corona measures, said Müller on Wednesday after federal-state consultations in Berlin.

Müller spoke of a prudent political path.

«And a path that was supported by an incredible number of people in solidarity.

Otherwise we would not have achieved that », says Müller.

«And this path, in turn, as arduous and tiring as it is, has saved the lives of many people.

We have thousands who did not have to go to a hospital or an intensive care unit because of this path and these successes. "

And there, too, a slow relief can be observed.

With this in mind, it is very important not to give up on this path now.

"It would be fatal to say a week or two too early that we are through now."

The federal and state governments agreed on Wednesday to extend the lockdown until March 7th.
