Esslingen (dpa / lsw) - A 60-year-old man was injured in a balcony fire in Esslingen.

The fire broke out on the balcony of an apartment building early Wednesday morning, the police said.

Because it had snowed so heavily, the extinguishing work was initially difficult.

About 30 residents had to leave the high-rise during the large-scale operation.

They were housed in a nearby company building and were unharmed.

The resident of the affected apartment was taken to a hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

His apartment was no longer habitable after the fire, it was said.

The amount of damage and the cause of the fire were initially unknown.
