Bergkamen / Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - In a courageous action, two residents saved a ten-year-old boy from a collapsed pond using a ladder.

The child had collapsed up to the chest in the ice water in the frozen duck pond in Bergkamen, as the police in the Unna district reported on Wednesday.

The resident hurried over with a ladder.

Particularly tricky: the boy was quite far - five meters - from the bank.

The rescuer put the ladder on the ice, carefully approached with the help of another helper and pulled the child out of the water.

The ten-year-old came to a clinic on Tuesday only slightly hypothermic.

The fire department issued an urgent warning against entering icy ponds and lakes.

"Unfortunately, people do not always adhere to the entry bans for such ice surfaces," said a spokesman for the Dortmund fire department.

"Fortunately, we have not yet been deployed in this direction in the current cold phase."

But the danger is real.

For Thursday, an ice rescue exercise is planned in the north of the city with two colleagues and the appropriate equipment.
