Augsburg (dpa / lby) - The Augsburg Bishop Bertram Meier and his Vicar General Harald Heinrich have already been vaccinated against the corona virus.

The Swabian diocese justified the vaccination on Wednesday with the fact that both were regularly active as pastors in nursing homes.

According to the Bavarian vaccination ordinance, Meier and Heinrich belonged to the group of people who should be vaccinated with priority, said a spokesman for the diocese.

First, the "Augsburger Allgemeine" reported on the vaccination for the two high-ranking representatives of the Catholic Church.

For several days there have been discussions in Germany about early corona vaccinations, for example for local politicians.

The diocese spokesman emphasized that the vaccinations for the 60-year-old Meier and the 53-year-old Heinrich could not be considered to be brought forward.

Both are to be regarded as staff of homes within the meaning of the regulation who can already be vaccinated.

In Swabia, two local politicians are currently under criticism for bringing forward corona vaccinations.

Both the district administrator of the Donau-Ries district, Stefan Rößle (CSU), and the independent mayor of the district town of Donauwörth, Jürgen Sorré, had already received a vaccination in January.

Both emphasized that they had been asked because otherwise vaccination doses would have had to be thrown away.
