Schwerin / Rostock (dpa / mv) - Now it is official: The corona pandemic brought the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania tourism industry a minus of 19 percent to 27.8 million overnight stays last year.

As the statistical office reported on Wednesday in Schwerin, the first lockdown in spring 2020 had already led to a sharp decline in guest arrivals and overnight stays.

The subsequent easing phase resulted in high numbers of arrivals and overnight stays in the summer months, which, according to the tourism association, also led to peak values in August and September.

"This recovery effect of the summer season could not compensate for the heavy losses of the lockdown months," said the statistics office.

The negative annual result for the 2020 season affected almost all types of accommodation.

Compared to 2019, youth hostels and huts had the biggest losses in terms of overnight stays with a minus of 57 percent and the recreation and holiday homes with a minus of 38 percent.

According to the statistical office, the country's hotels were also badly affected, where the minus was 30 percent.

Only the campsites showed an increase in overnight stays of ten percent.
