Schwerin / Wismar (dpa / mv) - According to the union, there is a risk of drastic staff cuts at the MV shipyards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund.

As the IG Metall Coast announced on Tuesday evening, the management of the financially troubled shipyard association has announced negotiations with works councils and the union.

The employees had previously been informed of the plans in a video message.

According to an NDR report, around 1200 of a total of 3100 jobs are available.

The management of the shipyard group belonging to the Asian Genting Group did not want to comment that evening.

"A clear cut is not to be done with us," emphasized IG Metall district manager Daniel Friedrich.

Shipyard management and politicians are required to point out perspectives for the employees at all three locations.

Genting Hong Kong took over MV Werften in 2016 in order to build cruise ships for its own needs.

Due to the Corona crisis, however, the cruises broke down worldwide and thus one of the group's most important sources of income.

The construction of ships that had already started was temporarily stopped, but started up again with the help of state loans.

Since the summer, the shipyards have been trying to come under the protective umbrella of the federal government's economic stabilization fund.

Three-digit million sums have already been approved.
