Cologne (dpa) - Ships have been sailing on the Rhine again since Tuesday.

The water level in Cologne fell below the limit of 8.30 meters in the morning, said a spokesman for the Rhine waterways and shipping office.

This means that the Rhine is reopened for shipping.

However, there are still some restrictions: the ships would have to sail in the middle third of the river and reduce their speed in order to avoid waves.

A further drop in water levels is expected for the next few days, so that the situation should relax even further.
