Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony is applying for the planned hydrogen technology center of the federal government.

A concept presented on Tuesday provides for the establishment of the "HIC - Hydrogen and Mobility Innovation Center", which could work in Chemnitz in a year.

That would be an ideal location, announced the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Dresden, pointing out that it is already a research and transfer focus for hydrogen technologies and fuel cell vehicle drives.

In addition, there are five vehicle and engine plants in the vicinity as well as around 780 suppliers, equipment suppliers and service providers for the automotive industry.

Saxony wants to set an example with regard to the use of hydrogen as a building block for sustainable mobility and defossilization of industry, said Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Dulig (SPD).

The HIC could help the country develop into a leading location for this technology in Germany.

The application is supported by the city and the TU Chemnitz, the TU Dresden, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, BMW Leipzig and the automotive supplier Vitesco Technologies as well as many small and medium-sized companies.

The federal government wants to accelerate research on hydrogen.

Germany should set the pace of this future industry internationally and hydrogen technologies “Made in Germany” should be competitive worldwide.

To establish an innovation center, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure will select three finalists from the nationwide applications by the end of March.

These locations are then checked in the course of feasibility studies, and the best concept will be decided in late summer.
