Bad Ems (dpa / lrs) - According to initial calculations by the State Statistical Office, the corona pandemic led to an “unprecedented decline” in the number of guests and overnight stays in Rhineland-Palatinate last year.

According to the preliminary calculations presented on Tuesday, the number of visitors fell by almost 40 percent to 6.05 million compared to 2019.

The number of overnight stays fell by 33 percent to 17.42 million.

The slump in December was particularly severe: with only 62,000 guests, this figure was 88 percent below the previous year's result.

The number of overnight stays fell by 78 percent to 291,000.

At the beginning of November, due to the corona pandemic, overnight stays in Germany were only allowed for necessary and expressly not for tourist purposes.

Long-term camping is also prohibited.

The restrictions persist.

In the first lockdown in April 2020, however, the declines were even more drastic.

At that time, only 42,000 guests and 222,000 overnight stays were counted.
