Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The number of pupils at Hamburg's general education schools has risen to more than 200,000 for the first time in more than four decades.

"We last had such numbers of students at the end of the 1970s," said school senator Ties Rabe (SPD) on Tuesday.

According to the authorities, a total of 200,677 boys and girls attend the 411 elementary schools, district schools, special schools and high schools - 20,279 more than ten years ago.

The number of primary school students grew particularly strongly - namely by 9,323 or 16 percent.

In contrast, the proportion of pupils in private schools fell significantly.

"In 2014 it was 10.7 percent, it is currently only 9.3 percent," said the authority.

Reasons include the closings and planned closings of some Catholic schools.

The number of vocational school students is also falling.

Due to the lower number of apprenticeships in the corona pandemic, it fell by 1,352 to 50,539.
