Hanover (dpa / lni) - The state government has introduced a new nationwide uniform gaming treaty that will in future allow games of chance on the Internet, despite criticism from associations in the state parliament.

Individual associations from the field of addiction prevention and counseling had advised not to give the contract the green light, the State Chancellery announced on Tuesday in Hanover.

According to the government, however, the new state treaty provides for numerous regulations to protect players.

Now the state parliament still has to discuss the contract, which is to come into force on July 1, 2021.

The state treaty is intended to fundamentally re-regulate gaming in Germany.

Among other things, online poker and online casinos are to be allowed in Germany in the future.

In spite of some successes, it has so far not been possible to decisively curb the unmanageable range of games on offer on the Internet.

For this reason, online gambling should in future be possible for providers according to strict rules and a licensing procedure.

A new central gaming authority is also planned, which will be based in Saxony-Anhalt.
