The Belgian Remco Evenepoel, seriously injured in August at the Tour of Lombardy, said he wanted to return to competition in May on the occasion of the Giro, in comments reported Tuesday by the newspaper La Dernier Heure-Les Sports.

"The objective is now that I am ready to resume competition on May 8 (at the Giro d'Italia). When will I be in shape? May 8!", Assured Evenepoel, who received the medical green light on Monday to start training again.

The young runner (21) underwent examinations at the Herentals clinic in Belgium on Monday which showed that the fracture of the pelvic bone affected during his fall in the Tour of Lombardy on August 15 was now consolidated.

The return to training of the Deceuninck-Quick Step prodigy had been repeatedly postponed due to a longer recovery than initially expected.

In 2020, he won all four stage races in which he participated (Tours of San Juan, Algarve, Burgos, Poland) before falling heavily at the Tour of Lombardy, when he had planned to compete in October the Giro, his first big lap.
