Hannover / Bremen (dpa / lni) - Several cities in Lower Saxony and Bremen warned on Tuesday against entering frozen waters.

"When stepping on these ice surfaces there is a danger to life by breaking in and drowning," said the city of Oldenburg, for example, referring to measurements from several bodies of water.

"The ice thicknesses determined were one to a maximum of two centimeters," it said.

Safe entry is possible with an ice thickness of 15 centimeters.

The water police warned people not to step on ice surfaces on the Mittelland Canal and the Weser.

"Anyone who breaks in runs the risk of being dragged underwater and not coming to the surface."

The environmental department in Bremen made a similarly clear statement: "The ice on the waters and lakes is still far too thin to safely carry people," wrote the spokesman.

"Despite the persistent cold, life is in danger on all Bremen waters!"

The ice in Hanover is not yet thick enough either.

In order to be able to enter the Maschsee safely, a reliable and continuous layer of ice at least 13 centimeters thick is needed on the lake, said a city spokeswoman.

"Experience has shown that a sufficient ice thickness is achieved after 10 to 14 days at the earliest with continuously high freezing temperatures."

And: "The ice of the Maschsee may only be entered if and as long as the lake is cleared for this by the city of Hanover."

It was initially unclear whether such a release is even possible in the corona pandemic.
