Norderney (dpa / lni) - The British corona virus variant B.1.1.7 has also been detected for the first time on the East Frisian island of Norderney.

The district administration announced that a corresponding finding was confirmed to the Aurich district health department on Tuesday.

Accordingly, the more infectious mutation was found in a man at the end of January - he has since died.

There are currently no further references to the Corona variant, it said.

With 39 cases, Norderney currently has the most corona infections in the Aurich district.

For a few days, the number of cases has been increasing on the island with around 6,000 inhabitants.

The city and the district are in close contact to check whether further measures are necessary in view of the infection situation, said the district administration.

District administrator Olaf Meinen and island mayor Frank Ulrichs appealed to the islanders to strictly adhere to hygiene rules and contact restrictions.
