Tsegay improved by more than two seconds the old reference time set by his compatriot Genzebe Dibaba (3: 55.17) on February 1, 2014 in Karlsruhe (Germany).
The 24-year-old Ethiopian has two bronze medals in her favorite distance at the 2016 Indoor Worlds in Portland and the 2019 Doha World Championships.
