• USA Those who pull the strings in impeachment to Trump

  • US War behind the scenes against Donald Trump

The

impeachment trial

- the second part of the 'impeachment' - against Donald Trump, which begins this Tuesday in the US Senate at 7 p.m. Spanish peninsular time, will be held from Sunday to Friday.

But not on Saturday.

The reason is that one of the former president's lawyers,

David Schoen,

is an Orthodox Jew who has informed the Senate leaders that he follows the 'Shabbat', that is, the precept of that religion not to work since sunset. Friday until sunset on Saturday.

Schoen's lawsuit, revealed by the website 'Politico', is one of the few things that were decided at press time about how the trial will be carried out.

The only thing clear is that the 'impeachment' is going to be quick.

It will last

between 10 and 20 days

, that is, the same as the one before Trump was subjected a year ago.

So the cause was the president's attempt to pressure the Ukrainian government to help him against Joe Biden in the November elections, which he would end up losing.

Now, it is about the assault on Congress in which five people died carried out by Trump's followers just as the Legislature was formally declaring Joe Biden the winner of the elections.

In 2020, the Republicans, who had a majority in the Senate, did not want the process to drag on to avoid damaging the electoral expectations of the president, just the opposite of the Democrats.

Now,

the political logic is the opposite.

Democrats control the Senate and do not want the trial

to drag on

so as not to hamper the agenda of a president of the same party: Joe Biden.

Republican leaders don't want a long trial either, in part because the party is totally divided over whether or not it should follow Trump's legacy or revert to the pre-2016 conservatism model. Impeachment takes precedence in the Senate, so

It slows down both the ratification of senior officials

of the new government and the debate on the huge stimulus package for 1.9 million dollars (almost 1.6 billion euros) launched by Biden to combat the economic impact of Covid-19.

In turn, the president is preparing another spending program, this time for about

3 trillion dollars

(2.5 trillion euros) that would be disbursed over several years and whose objective would be the recovery of the United States after the Covid- 19.

That program will be the foundation stone of the Biden presidency, because it will include

massive investment in infrastructure and the promotion of renewable energy.

But the White House knows that its approval is going to be difficult, and that its 'window of opportunity' closes at the end of this year, because in 2022 there are elections to Congress, and legislators are only going to think about it.

So the last thing Democrats want is to 'burn' vital time with an 'impeachment' of a former president.

Especially when it

is an 'impeachment' that is not going to go forward

(as none has ever gone forward in the history of the United States) since the Republicans have made it clear that they are not going to support it.

At best, Democrats could get around 55 votes - their 50 plus 5 Republicans who are open to the possibility of supporting Trump's conviction - a far cry from the 67 needed for the president to be found guilty of incite insurrection.

For now, the little that is known is that both the prosecution and the defense will each have 16 hours to present charges and defense.

It will be 16 hours of audiovisual drama, because the Democrats have announced that they will show videos of the insurrection,

many of them taken by Trump supporters, combined with the speech that the president gave before the assault, when he addressed tens of thousands of supporters together with Congress and told them that "we are going to go to the Capitol" and that "we have to fight, and fight harder."

That is almost all that is decided.

In fact, a key issue, such as the summons of witnesses, has yet to be decided, and will probably need to be voted on in the House during sessions.
