A gendarme was seriously injured Sunday during a control operation to fight armed robberies and wild rodeos on the island of Saint-Martin, in the West Indies.

The soldier was hit by a motocross, said the gendarmerie.

The crash happened while bikers were performing a wild rodeo in Bellevue, a neighborhood near the border with the Dutch part of the Caribbean island.

The gendarme was at a roundabout on a road control device when he was struck.

In serious but stable condition

Supported by the emergency services in serious condition, he was in stable condition Monday morning.

The pilot of the two-wheeler fled in the direction of the Dutch part of the island, witnesses report.

Since the upsurge in armed robberies and wild rodeos, the gendarmerie has set up a reinforced device on the island.

Fifteen years ago, a gendarme was struck in the same circumstances during a wild rodeo.

He had not survived his injuries.
