A twin stroller started rolling in a garden in Hamburg because of the strong wind and drove into a pond.

A police spokesman said on Sunday in Hamburg that one of the 22-month-old boys got his head under water.

The mother immediately pulled her child out of the pond.

A neighbor grabbed the second boy who had only landed with his lower body in the ice-cold water.

The children were brought directly to the apartment and looked after.

An emergency doctor flown in with the rescue helicopter then inspected the twins and found no health problems.

The mother was only inattentive for a brief moment when the double car was set in motion due to the wind and took off on the slightly sloping terrain in Hamburg-Nienstedten, the police spokesman said.

The mother immediately ran after and went into the water to save her children.

Icy winter weather and strong winds had a firm grip on the entire north.

However, accidents due to the onset of winter were largely absent, as the police reported.

Only in northern Schleswig-Holstein did slippery roads and snowdrifts cause occasional impairments.

In the districts of Schleswig-Flensburg and North Friesland, the police moved from midnight to Sunday noon to a total of eleven weather-related accidents, as a police spokesman said.

Serious injuries were not caused.

The north was spared large amounts of snow.

Nevertheless, people in northern Germany should dress warmly.

Meteorologists reckon with so-called ice days for the north - days on which temperatures do not rise above zero degrees even during the day and therefore permafrost prevails.

According to the police, the rescue workers did not have to move out at the weekend in Hamburg because of helpless homeless people.

The speaker was also initially not aware of any possible cold deaths.

In Hamburg daily maximum temperatures of -5 degrees

In parts of Schleswig-Holstein there was still snow from the past few days, as meteorologist Frank Böttcher explained in an online press conference on Sunday.

Due to the frosty temperatures, however, this had taken a solidified ice shape in many places.

According to Böttcher, loose powder snow in particular was dangerous because it could be transported by the continuous wind.

There was a particularly strong wind on the coast of Schleswig-Holstein on Sunday.

At times there was a risk of severe gusts of wind.

This resulted in flooding on the Baltic coast.

In the Kiel area, from Sunday morning onwards, emergency services were deployed a total of 35 times due to the strong wind.

However, this involved in particular building fences and roof tiles flying around as well as fallen trees.

People weren't hurt.

In combination with the prevailing frosty temperatures, Böttcher expected ice floes on the Baltic Sea and closed ice surfaces on the inland lakes for the next few days in view of the flooding.

However, he warned against entering it.

Due to the insufficient thickness there is a risk to life.

According to Böttcher, low water was announced on the North Sea coast.

The Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei canceled some ferry connections between Dagebüll and the North Sea islands of Föhr and Amrum on Sunday due to the low water levels.

Ferry traffic was completely eliminated between Schlüttsiel and the Halligen Hooge and Langeneß.

Opposite the broadcaster NDR 90.3, Böttcher Hamburg also forecast sub-zero temperatures for the coming days.

The icy east wind brings daily maximum temperatures of -5 degrees.

"This cold air mass is very likely to stay with us all week with night temperatures that are sometimes below -10 degrees," he said.

In view of the expected winter weather, the railway had already made adjustments to the timetable on Saturday.

Several long-distance connections in the north were also affected.

According to the company, all long-distance trains between Hamburg and Kiel, Hamburg and Lübeck and between Hamburg and Westerland were canceled on Saturday and Sunday.

The timetable has also been greatly thinned out between Hamburg and Rostock / Strahlsund / Binz.

50 train travelers stranded in Uelzen

Train travelers from the Metronom train company who were stranded in Uelzen continued their journey on Monday morning.

A company spokesman said some of the 50 or so passengers stuck in the Uelzen train station had taken the early morning train to Hamburg.

Trains were running again on the route from Uelzen to Hamburg and Hanover, but some delays occurred.

Metronom set up a train as a hotel train in Uelzen train station on Sunday evening because of the snow chaos and commissioned the German Red Cross to look after the stranded passengers, the spokesman said.

The helpers provided the people with blankets, hot drinks and a soup.

Even on Monday morning, the situation on the lines of the railway companies Metronom, Enno and Erixx was still tense.

Due to the heavy snowfall, which in some cases continued, there are restrictions on all routes.

Before starting their journey, passengers should find out whether the trains are actually running according to schedule.

Strong restrictions are to be expected on the RE 2 Hanover-Göttingen route, here the trains only run sporadically.

On the lines RE 30 Wolfsburg-Gifhorn-Hanover and on the RE 50 Wolfsburg-Braunschweig-Hildesheim no train journeys are expected until noon, it said.

The same also applies to the routes of the Erixx RB 47, RE 10, RB 42/43, RB 37, RB 38 and RB 37 railroad lines.

The situation on the route RB 32 Lüneburg-Dannenberg was initially unclear.

However, the weather had no effect on the take-offs and landings at Hamburg Airport.

Air traffic restrictions are still only due to the corona pandemic, as an airport spokeswoman said.

Around 20 landings and around 20 take-offs were planned for Sunday.
