Mülheim (dpa / lnw) - Large-scale operation for the fire department in Mülheim: an empty supermarket has been burning since early Monday morning.

A fire department spokesman said that the building, which is around 150 by 100 meters in size, is in full flames.

In order to bring the fire under control, emergency services from the surrounding cities were also alerted.

The supermarket is currently being rebuilt.

There were no injuries.

Because of the icy temperatures, the firefighters would have to be replaced regularly.

"All of them are quickly frozen by the freezing water," said the spokesman.

A total of around 180 firefighters are on duty.

Experts from the State Environment Agency and the fire service carried out pollutant measurements.

Residents should keep windows and doors closed.

The extinguishing operation will take at least several hours, if not days, said the spokesman.
