Nuremberg (dpa) - In Germany, an estimated 59 million working days have been canceled due to the second corona wave.

This is the result of a study by the Nuremberg Institute for Employment Research (IAB).

The institute announced on Monday in Nuremberg that working hours from October 2020 to mid-February 2021 will be reduced by an estimated 276 million hours or 6.2 hours per employed person through increased sick leave, quarantine measures and closings of daycare centers or schools.

Loss of working hours due to short-time work or dismissals are not taken into account.

"Overall, around 1.2 million people in employment could not or cannot work because childcare options are only accessible to a limited extent or they want to look after their children at home due to the pandemic," said the IAB.

The study's authors, Susanne Wanger and Enzo Weber, said the loss of work associated with the second wave of the pandemic was considerable.

They examined the period from the swelling of the second wave at the end of October to the possible lockdown at the end of February.

"The loss of work affects the economy in addition to the ordered closings in industries such as catering and retail," they emphasized.

The total loss of work due to the daycare center and school closings amount to an estimated 37.4 million working days.

Actual Covid 19 diseases therefore led to 8.7 million fewer working days among the affected workers.

Wanger and Weber are assuming an additional sick leave rate of 0.2 percent at the end of January.

In addition, 17.7 million working days are missing due to an ordered quarantine for employed people.
