Koblenz (dpa) - The trial against a suspected high-ranking functionary of the banned Kurdish Workers' Party PKK before the Koblenz Higher Regional Court is on the home straight.

The prosecution and defense are expected to speak from today (9:30 a.m.).

The verdict could come on February 18.

The 38-year-old is said to have controlled the activities of the PKK in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland at times under the code name “Rojhat”.

The Turkish citizen last reported in Grevenbroich, North Rhine-Westphalia, gave instructions to other PKK officials, prepared meetings and coordinated fundraising, according to the indictment.

From June 2017 to June 2019 he is said to have acted as a member of the “foreign terrorist organization” PKK.

The man was arrested in Frankfurt in early 2020.

According to the court, he spoke of political involvement in the process, but did not comment on specific allegations.

The process has been running since October.

The Kurds are a large minority in Turkey.

Many Kurds accuse the state of oppression.

The approximately 140-page indictment states that a foreign terrorist organization with armed units that also carried out attacks with explosives and weapons.

Soldiers, police officers and occasionally civilians were injured and killed.
