In the premises in central Malmö there is a kitchen and rest areas for 35 people.

There are smaller places than usual, as the spread of covid-19 means that the number of night guests at Värmestugan must be reduced.

Previously, the shelter could accommodate 50 people.

In the room, the seats have been sparse, which means that it now has room for 35 chairs instead of 50 as before.

- We have made a proper adjustment so that you do not sit so close to each other, says Liv Palm, unit manager at Skåne Stadsmission.

Full of shelters in the city

Värmestugan, which is a hostel run by several organizations, has been full almost every night since they opened in mid-December.

And during the weekend, almost all emergency night places for the homeless in Malmö were occupied.

The minus degrees in recent days is another dimension that causes the pressure to increase.

- We usually have a fairly high pressure, it does not necessarily have to be because it is cold, it may be that it rains or blows a lot.

It is never safe to be homeless, says Liv Palm.

Did not have to reject anyone

So far no one was able to send in the perfect solution, which is not strange.

If needed, there are other premises in Malmö to open up, according to Liv Palm.

- Fortunately, we have not had to reject anyone.

But the need remains great.

- There are about a hundred every night who have no warm and safe place to be.

And then it's probably on the low side, says Liv Palm.
