Neckarsulm (dpa) - After the discounter Lidl, the grocer Kaufland has also lowered the pork prices, which were briefly increased after protests by farmers.

The purchase price, which was increased in mid-December for various pork items to support local farmers, “unfortunately could not be maintained due to the current market conditions”, Kaufland announced on Monday on request.

The discounter Lidl had previously announced that it had lowered pork prices again.

Both companies belong to the Neckarsulm Schwarz Group.

Lidl, Kaufland and other retailers such as the Rewe Group had raised prices in response to protest and blockade actions by farmers in December - the surcharges were intended to benefit farmers.

At Lidl and Kaufland it was said at the time that the purchase price for various items from the pork range had been increased by 1 euro per kilogram, as a result of which the sales price would rise by the same amount.

The farmers, who are in need of their livelihoods, had previously complained that producer prices were too low and that the retail chains were acting unfairly in their opinion.

Lidl justified the change on Thursday with the fact that the market had not followed the price signal.

"This created a considerable competitive disadvantage for us."

It is therefore not possible to keep the prices permanently and solely at the higher level.

"From now on we have to adjust to the market level in the pig price segment."
