Some students are allowed to have lunch much earlier or later than usual, they are no longer allowed to serve themselves and the range of food and salad buffets has become smaller in some schools.

But at Tunaskolan, they invest extra in food.

- It is delicious because it is quite boring with corona and then we get to have something extra fun, says student Nelly Bergren in year 6A at Tunaskolan in Luleå.

Barbecues out on the schoolyard

For a few years now, the principal at Tunaskolan has introduced several different theme days during the school year when students are offered school food with an extra golden edge.

A concept they have now chosen to continue with even during the ongoing pandemic.

Something that is really appreciated is when during lunch meat is grilled outdoors in the schoolyard on muurikka or on charcoal grills.

- We call the barbecue Hell`s kitchen and then we print posters for the different themes so the children can long a little, says the principal, says Marcus Hedström.

Orders pizza for everyone

Another theme that turned out to be extra appreciated by the students is pizza day where the school orders pizza for everyone.

- Yes, pizza day has proven to be very popular and then they can eat as much as they want and some eat almost so that they are a little well fed and when we grill outside then it is we principals at the school who are responsible for the grilling and sometimes some of the older students help and the last time we grilled 700 portions, says Marcus Hedström.

In the video, you hear what the different food initiatives mean for the students at the school and how they think that the pandemic has affected life in the school canteen.

In the clip, you meet Yosif Turki, 11, Harry Meskanen, 12, and Nelly Berggren, 13, from grades 5 and 6 at Tunaskolan in Luleå.
