  • For the first time in Hauts-de-France, a baby was born after freezing oocytes and pregnancy could have taken place after an ovarian tissue transplant.

  • This is the result of long-term work carried out by teams from the Medically assisted procreation service within the Lille hospital center.

  • Patients who have undergone extensive cancer treatments can use a fertility preservation program and techniques.

A notable advance in the preservation of fertility after cancer.

This is a first in the Hauts-de-France region: a baby was born after freezing oocytes and a pregnancy could take place after an ovarian tissue transplant, announced the hospital center (CHU) of Lille, in a statement.

An identical event took place in Alsace in 2018.

The result of long-term work carried out by teams from the Reproductive Medicine (AMP) service within the Lille hospital.

“Heavy cancer treatments are likely to impair the ability to conceive a child.

Thus, for several years, the patients concerned have been able to use a program and techniques to preserve their fertility, ”underlines the Lille University Hospital.

Egg freezing

The first is the freezing of oocytes, or ovarian tissue, from an early age, and before the start of cancer treatment.

"Once the cancer treatment is finished, they can be reimplanted for pregnancy, representing great hope for these patients", indicates the CHU.

The first baby born from egg freezing is a little girl named Marla who has just blown out her first candle.

In addition, a patient, who received an ovarian tissue transplant in 2018, became pregnant.

Unique observatory in Europe

Unique in Europe, a post-cancer fertility observatory was set up at the Lille University Hospital in 2006, and all the public and private establishments in the region involved in the management of cancer in women are part of this observatory. .

“Our observatory generates nearly 500 consultations per year, and 130 new patients are followed in this context each year,” explains Dr Christine Decanter, head of the AMP center.

About a hundred little girls are also followed for their pubertal development and their future fertility.

Finally, we are carrying out numerous research studies on the toxicity of chemotherapy protocols on the hormonal and reproductive function of the ovary.
