Mainz / Belm (dpa) - In the case of the corona outbreak with variant B.1.1.7 in a retirement and nursing home in Belm in the Osnabrück district, further questions are unanswered.

When exactly the residents were infected, the management of the facility could not say on Monday.

There are still no difficult courses, it said.

In the home, 14 senior citizens had B.1.1.7.

has been proven, as the district had announced on Sunday.

Previously, on January 25, all residents of the home had been vaccinated against Corona for the second time with the Biontech / Pfizer product.

The district had announced that the positive results in the daily quick tests of the employees on February 2nd were noticeable.

When the residents were completely tested and the viruses were typed, 14 cases of the British variant were then detected at the end of last week - exclusively with an asymptomatic or mild course.

Biontech pointed out in a response on Monday that the vaccine would protect 95 percent from the disease seven days after the second vaccination - according to initial analyzes, probably also with B.1.1.7.

"If people get Covid-19 despite the immunization, the aim of the vaccination is to protect against a serious course of the disease," it said.

According to the current state of knowledge, the fact that all residents who tested positive have asymptomatic or mild courses speak in favor of the vaccination and the resulting positive effects.

The Bremen virologist Andreas Dotzauer sees no cause for concern in the infections in the home in Belm.

After the first vaccination, about ten days passed until protective antibodies were detected and after the second vaccination it would take another time until the final effectiveness was achieved, said the head of the laboratory for virus research at the University of Bremen.

One goal of the vaccinations is to drastically reduce the symptoms and severity of the course of the disease in the event of a corona infection.

According to Dotzauer, this is apparently the case in Belm according to the current status - even with the virus variant.

It must also be taken into account that this case is about older people, for whom the immune protection may not have been so strong.
