Cologne (dpa) - No street parades, no ceremonial meetings and no carnival parties: The corona-related cancellation of the carnival is not only spoiling the mood for many fools this year, but also for many retailers, restaurateurs and hoteliers.

A study published on Monday by the Institut der Deutschen Wirtschaft (IW) puts the economic damage from the failure of this year's session nationwide at around 1.5 billion euros.

The news portal “t-online” had previously reported on the study.

In their study, the IW experts not only took into account the Cologne carnival, but also the foolish goings-on in Düsseldorf and Mainz.

The gastronomy suffered the greatest damage due to the failure of the boozy celebration with around 660 million euros.

According to the calculations, the retail sector is also missing out on revenues of around 330 million euros.

Of this, 280 million euros alone go to costume sales.

The hotel industry is missing 160 million euros and the transport sector around 240 million euros.

The IW even assumes that the hustle and bustle - Corona or not - will probably not be a hundred percent, but that retail sales of alcoholic beverages will increase in the week before Carnival, as every year.

In addition, the experts took into account that the session this year is relatively short with only 98 days and, accordingly, the loss of sales is also lower than it would be in an average carnival year.
