From the point of view of the AfD parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel, politics must seek proximity to protest movements such as the “lateral thinkers”.

"I can just warn against putting people in a corner," said Weidel, who is also the AfD state chairman in Baden-Württemberg, in Stuttgart on Monday.

MEPs should go to such demonstrations as representatives of the voters, talk to the people and find out about their concerns.

These are people from all political backgrounds who have demonstrated against restrictions on freedoms.

You have to accept that, said Weidel.

Freedom rights in Germany continued to erode.

The Baden-Württemberg Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been observing key players in the “lateral thinking” movement since December

Weidel's co-parliamentary group leader Alexander Gauland recently described the AfD as a “movement party” that was supposed to maintain contact with certain protest groups.

Party leader Jörg Meuthen contradicted him, however.

His party does not see itself as the parliamentary arm of protest movements on the street.
