Rome (AP) - Pope Francis has appointed two new undersecretaries for the Catholic Synod of Bishops, including a woman for the first time.

The 84-year-old head of the church promoted the French theologian Nathalie Becquart to the office of the Synod Secretariat.

The two new undersecretaries are to help Cardinal Mario Grech from Malta with the preparation and implementation of Synods of Bishops, which represent the universal Church.

The Spaniard Luis Marin de San Martin was appointed as the second person.

Church media highlighted Becquart's new position with voting rights on the body as a symbol of the empowerment of women in the Church.
