Münster (dpa / lnw) - The situation on the motorways is largely relaxed on Sunday morning despite the heavy onset of winter in parts of North Rhine-Westphalia.

"There are definitely 20 to 30 centimeters of snow around Münster," said a police spokesman.

The main traffic axes in Münsterland are well cleared.

There were hardly any accidents.

"The people were sensible and stayed at home."

In Bielefeld, which was also particularly hard hit by the onset of winter, the gritting vehicles made good progress on the motorways.

In Dortmund, the police reported around 35 weather-related accidents from the night - for example on the Sauerland line A45 with its many bridges.

But in all cases it remained with sheet metal damage.

Further south in Düsseldorf and Cologne there were hardly any problems.

The winter services in North Rhine-Westphalia were set up for one of the largest assignments in years.

Authorities had appealed that, if at all necessary, drivers should only drive off with a full tank, winter tires and blankets to warm up.
