Kiel (dpa / lno) - From the point of view of Equal Opportunities Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, the differences in salaries between women and men are still too great, even in Schleswig-Holstein, despite progress.

"We are on the right track in Schleswig-Holstein," said the CDU politician.

"That is by no means a reason to celebrate, because in some industries the difference in wages is still striking."

Women often earn significantly less than men precisely where there is a complaint about a shortage of skilled workers.

Sütterlin-Waack referred to information from the Federal Statistical Office, according to which the difference between the average gross hourly earnings of women and men in Germany in 2019 was 19 percent.

In Schleswig-Holstein it was 13 percent.

In some areas, however, the difference is 25 percent.

Equal Pay Day is a reminder of the wage differences.

This day is intended to symbolically make the different pay visible and show the day up to which women have arithmetically worked unpaid compared to men.

For Germany it was set on March 10th, for Schleswig-Holstein according to Sütterlin-Waack on February 17th.

The corona pandemic in particular clearly demonstrated the importance of the health and social professions - from doctors to nursing staff to educators, said the minister.

"And there, of all places, the difference in wages between women and men averages 20 percent."

Skilled workers are also desperately wanted in IT, natural sciences and technical professions.

There it is always said that these professions are traditionally held less often by women.

“There may be different reasons for this.

However, I know that my interest as a woman is not exactly aroused by a salary difference of up to 25 percent compared to male colleagues. "

Sütterlin-Waack sums up that real equal treatment of women and men on the labor market has not yet been achieved.

"There is still a lot of catching up to do, especially with regard to management positions."
