Greetsiel (dpa / lni) - The Leysiel sea lock near Greetsiel in East Friesland is currently completely dry for maintenance.

In this way, workers can clean the structure from the inside and check it for damage, as the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) announced.

According to initial tests, no major damage can be identified.

"We are surprised, it looks quite neat," said Armin Heine, head of the barrage works at NLWKN.

The maintenance of the sea lock, which last took place five years ago, has an impact on shipping.

The lock is the only way into the North Sea for cutters and pleasure craft moored in Greetsiel harbor.

The traffic is therefore now temporarily idle.

According to the plan, the work will take until mid-February.

According to the NLWKN, the Leysiel sea lock is one of the most important water management systems in East Frisia.

In addition to the lock, the structure built in 1991 also serves as a sluice for internal drainage and as a barrage for coastal protection.
