The plans to cut down parts of the urban and old beech forest Vitahall in Sölvesborg stir up emotions.

Many private individuals and organizations are protesting against the project to build a new residential area on the site.

Wants to preserve the forest

The political opposition in Sölvesborg opposes the plans.

- We think it is important to preserve the forest and we would like to see a greener Sölvesborg in the future, says Opposition Councilor Johanna Beijer (S).

The question is fragmented

The issue also divides the governing coalition.

The SoL party, which is part of the Co-Government, is namely an opponent.

The other governing parties in Sölvesborg, the Sweden Democrats, the Moderates and the Christian Democrats, on the other hand, are behind the construction.

And the support of the three parties is enough to realize the construction.

Majority supports

Namely, they have a majority of the seats in Sölvesborg City Council behind them - 25 out of 49 seats.

- Buildings close to the city are needed.

Vitahall has become what is considered most suitable, says municipal councilor Paul Andersson (M).

On Monday, it will be decided whether forests will be felled to make way for a new residential area.

Then the City Council decides on the detailed plan for the area.
