Flensburg / Kiel (dpa / lno) - People in northern Germany have to be prepared for floods on the Baltic Sea.

A continuous east wind brings masses of water to the Baltic Sea coast, as meteorologist Frank Böttcher said in an online press conference on Sunday.

On Sunday there were increased water levels of up to 90 centimeters, especially in the Flensburg area.

For Monday, water levels up to 80 centimeters higher can be expected in the Bay of Kiel and the water will also rise significantly in the Bay of Lübeck.

On the North Sea coast, however, according to Böttcher, low water was announced.

The Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei canceled some ferry connections between Dagebüll and the North Sea islands of Föhr and Amrum on Sunday due to the low water levels.

Ferry traffic was completely eliminated between Schlüttsiel and the Halligen Hooge and Langeneß.

In combination with the prevailing frosty temperatures, Böttcher expected ice floes on the Baltic Sea and closed ice surfaces on the inland lakes for the next few days in view of the flooding.

However, he warned against entering it.

Due to the insufficient thickness there is a risk to life.
