Antigua / Oldham (dpa) - A 70-year-old man from England rowed unaccompanied for almost two months across the Atlantic.

Frank Rothwell from Oldham, England, started from the Canary Island of La Gomera in mid-December and arrived in Antigua in the Caribbean on Saturday, according to Alzheimer's Research UK.

The Briton collected donations for the organization with his crossing.

According to the organization, Rothwell is the oldest rower to have crossed the Atlantic unaccompanied - a distance of more than 4,800 kilometers.

Rothwell, who raised £ 640,000 in donations with his crossing, described his arrival as a "completely euphoric moment".

The British driver was also driven by the death of his brother-in-law, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, who died while rowing.

"While rowing, I've had heartbreaking messages from people who have had similar experiences to my brother-in-law, Roger, so I hope I've been able to help other families," Rothwell told PA news agency.
