Hanover (dpa / lni) - The German weather service warned of heavy snowfall in parts of Lower Saxony on Saturday.

Accordingly, people in the southern part of the state have to be prepared for extremely heavy snowdrifts and black ice from the evening hours.

The meteorologists reckoned that it would snow heavily in the central and especially in the southern part of Lower Saxony.

In the early afternoon, the weather was initially calm.

"We have a little snow in southern Lower Saxony," said a DWD meteorologist.

There is freezing rain locally.

"The heaviest rainfall will be on Sunday night."

It is expected that up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow will fall in some places by Sunday morning.

According to the forecast, it will continue to snow on Sunday and up to 40 centimeters of fresh snow is possible by evening.

The weather service warned of snow drifts and stormy gusts.

Heavy squalls are expected on the coast.

In many places, temperatures drop well below zero.

In the night of Sunday up to minus eight degrees are expected.
