New York (AP) - Christopher Plummer, who won an Oscar as the oldest actor in Hollywood history, is dead.

According to his management, the native Canadian died "peacefully" on Friday in his home in Connecticut, USA, with Elaine Taylor - "his wife and best friend for 53 years" - at his side.

Plummer was 91 years old.

Long-time manager Lou Pitt wrote that he was an extraordinary man who "loved and respected his profession deeply."

Numerous colleagues, including Helen Mirren, Julie Andrews, Chris Evans and director Ridley Scott paid tribute.

After success on the theater stage, Plummer celebrated his Hollywood breakthrough in 1965 as Baron von Trapp at the side of Julie Andrews in the film musical "The Sound of Music - My Songs, My Dreams".
