Halle (dpa / sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, job opportunities for long-term unemployed have fallen during the Corona crisis, according to the findings of labor market experts.

Those who have always had a hard time finding a job now have an even harder time, said Markus Behrens, managing director of the Saxony-Anhalt-Thuringia regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency.

Despite extensive government financial aid and job coaching for people who have been unemployed for more than a year, employers have become more reluctant to hire new employees.

"Many are facing existential problems because of the corona pandemic and are trying above all to keep their existing staff," said Behrens.

In January, 33,500 men and women in Saxony-Anhalt were without a job for more than a year, 1900 more than in December and 6800 more than in January 2020. Behrens appealed to employers, for example, funding opportunities with up to 100 percent of the minimum or Use collective wage more to bring the long-term unemployed back into working life.

He referred to the package of laws passed by the federal government two years ago, the Participation Opportunities Act, with the so-called social labor market as a component.

As of September 2020, 2664 long-term unemployed people were placed in companies via the job centers in Saxony-Anhalt.

That was almost 1000 more than in the same month last year.

According to the information, the activities were mainly helper jobs, for example in horticulture or housekeeping.

In Saxony-Anhalt in 2020, an annual average of around 86,110 people were unemployed, around one in three (around 28,900 people) for more than a year.

Compared to 2019, there were 4.7 percent more long-term unemployed in the country.
