Rostock / Greifswald (dpa / mv) - The psychological counseling centers at universities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have seen a significant increase in recent months.

The need for support has risen sharply, according to the student unions in Rostock and Greifswald.

The main reasons are motivation problems or fundamental difficulties in getting a structure into everyday work, said Malena Wiechers from the student union in Rostock and Wismar.

To remedy this, online workshops have been set up in Rostock.

There is support there with structuring.

A sign of the increasing needs of the students is that the duration of the consultations has increased.

“There used to be an average of four to five meetings until solutions were worked out,” said Wiechers.

Now the students used the full ten consultation hours that are possible.

"A big problem for a lot of students is the increasing isolation," said Nele Reidenbach from the Studierendenwerk Greifswald, which is also responsible for universities of applied sciences in Stralsund and Neubrandenburg.

In particular, those who had previously been quite well integrated with fellow students, friends and flatmates at the place of study suffered from increasing isolation.

Many previous contact persons have moved to their home countries, as online events do not require a local presence.

As Reidenbach said, psychologists are observing a serious increase in uncertainty as well as fear of failure and fear of the future in the pandemic.

These refer, for example, to the fact that certain labor market segments are currently and possibly also in the future.

Wiechers reported that the students were still very relaxed at the beginning of the pandemic.

You would have felt a certain relief.

There were longer semester breaks or more time for her housework.

Problems then came with online teaching.

"The internet got hooked, some lecturers were overwhelmed."

There are also economic difficulties that the students are currently struggling with, said Wiechers.

Many have lost their part-time jobs in pubs, for example.

This is especially true for foreign students, who have a more difficult job on the job market than their German fellow students.
