Essen (dpa / lnw) - The German Weather Service has issued the highest severe weather warning level for parts of Westphalia due to the expected severe onset of winter.

For the region from the Lippe district via Bielefeld and Paderborn to Münster and Unna, the DWD warns of heavy snowfall on Saturday from 9 p.m. and of extremely heavy snowdrifts from midnight.

For many other regions in North Rhine-Westphalia, the weather service warned of heavy snowfall with the second highest warning level.

It was still unclear on Saturday lunchtime which regions of the country will be particularly affected by the also expected freezing rain.

The German Weather Service wanted to publish the forecast for this in the course of the afternoon.

The Ruhr area and South Westphalia in particular could be affected.
