Erfurt (dpa / th) - After years of declines, the coronavirus pandemic could mean that the municipalities in Thuringia could face increasing expenses for social burials.

"It is to be expected that the applications for assumption costs for funerals will increase in 2021," said the spokeswoman for the Eisenach city administration, Janina Walter, the German press agency.

Short-time working and job loss could make the financial resources of the deceased and bereaved in the long run dwindle.

The consequence could be higher burdens for the municipalities.

The city administrations in Eisenach, Erfurt, Jena, Nordhausen, Gera and Sonneberg have not yet reported any unusual burdens or even cost explosions.

The number of social burials in Thuringia has recently declined.
