Schwerin (dpa / mv) - In view of the further development of open spaces in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the environmental organization BUND has called for stricter government guidelines against soil consumption.

Currently, three hectares of land are used across the country every day for settlement and transport purposes, said the agricultural expert of the BUND Mecklenburg-Vorpommen, Burkhard Roloff, the German press agency.

"The consequences are the direct loss of soil and habitats."

Built-up and sealed areas intervene in the water balance, the formation of new groundwater is disrupted and the risk of flooding increases.

Roloff demanded a program for sustainable land management in rural areas from the state government and, as a clear goal, halving the daily land consumption to 1.5 hectares by 2030.

In the long term, land consumption must be reduced to net zero.

"This means that new areas may only be built on if compensation for nature is created elsewhere."

The BUND responded to criticism from Agriculture and Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) on the further development of fields, meadows and pastures in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The 0.1 percent decline in agricultural area since 2016 means a loss of 1,347 hectares from a total area of 1.347 million hectares, the minister said.

The protection of agricultural land from other uses remains an important goal for him.

He hadn't announced any concrete steps.
