On 23 August 2020, an extensive fire started at Polarbröd's factory in Älvsbyn.

When the rescue service arrived at the scene, the fire was so severe that it could not be stopped - and the entire building was completely destroyed.

Several independent investigations into the fire

After the fire, a number of community agencies have investigated the incident: the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), Uppsala's rescue service and SOS Alarm - which discovered deficiencies and rectified them shortly afterwards.

Now an insurance company is also investigating the fire in Älvsbyn.

"Risk of losing the whole"

The reports have examined various parts of the incident but one thing is for sure - a lot went wrong with the extensive fire.

One of the reasons is that there were many stakeholders involved, according to rescue chief Torbjörn Johansson.

- When you expand part by part, there is a risk that you lose the whole.

Up to the owner to install sprinkler systems

SVT Norrbotten has read the latest fire and inspection report that the rescue service in Älvsbyn did in 2017. That report went through Polarbröd's fire protection but showed no remarks.

Despite the fact that MSB's investigation, among other things, stated that the premises should have had an automatic sprinkler system.

- We have judged so far that there was no requirement.

Sometimes we suggest to the owner that it could be good to install sprinklers, but it is up to the owner, says Torbjörn Johansson, rescue manager in Piteå-Älvsbyn.

In the video above, the rescue chief explains why there was no overall picture of the fire protection.
