05 February 2021 There are 9 blues at the start in the main draw of the Australian Open, the first Slam of 2021 which starts on Monday - three weeks later than the original date for quarantine - on the hard courts of Melbourne Park, as reported by LaPresse. This year for the tricolor tennis is a record attendance at the Major Down Under: there are 14 (9 men and 5 women) one more than in 2020. Treacherous draw for the blue number one Matteo Berrettini, n.10 in the ranking and ninth favorite of the tournament, which debuts against South African Kevin Anderson, 34 year old from Johannesburg who dropped to number 82 in the ranking but top ten only a year and a half ago. The most intriguing challenge - and certainly the hottest first round of the whole board - is however that between Jannik Sinner, 36 in the ranking, and Canadian Denis Shapovalov, 21 year old born in Tel Aviv, 12 ATP and eleventh head standard.

Unpublished comparison also that between Fabio Fognini, n.17 of the ranking and 16 of the seeding, and the French Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 29 years old from Schiltingheim n.84 ATP. There are no precedents even between Lorenzo Sonego, n.34 in the ranking and 31 in the seeding, and the American Sam Querrey, n.51 ATP. Fairly 'tough' draw for Stefano Travaglia, n.71 in the ranking, opposed for the first time in his career to the other American Frances Tiafoe, 23 years old from Hyattsville n.62 ATP. The winner of this challenge would most likely find world number one Novak Djokovic in the second round. The Serbian will launch the assault on his ninth Australian Open against Frenchman Chardy, then an arduous path with Zverev in the quarterfinals and eventually Thiem in the semifinals. The draw leaves the lower part of the board more open, where Nadal can claim his second head of series. The Spaniard could find on his way Rublev (8) in the second round, Tsitsipas (5) or Berrettini (9) in the quarters and possibly Medvedev (4) in the semifinals.

Urn not too benevolent for two of the five blue at the start in the main draw of the Australian Open, writes LaPresse. The worst draw went to Jasmine Paolini, n.97 in the ranking, who has to deal immediately with the Czech Karolina Pliskova, n.6 in the ranking and seeding. Not particularly well did Martina Trevisan, 86 in the ranking, drawn against the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, 26 years old from Chelyabinsk # 33 WTA. And it is also an unprecedented challenge between Elisabetta Cocciaretto, n.132 in the ranking, and the German Mona Barthel, 30 years old from Bad Segeberg n.233 WTA.

For Sara Errani, n.131 of the ranking, also promoted by the qualifiers, debut against the Chinese Qiang Wang, 29 year old from Tianjin n.34 WTA and 30th seeded. Finally, quite comfortable draw for Camila Giorgi, n.76 in the ranking, who debuts against the Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova, 33 years old of Moscow origin n. 1,432 WTA (competing with protected ranking: she returned to the tour after three years of maternity leave). Yra le big opens the usual saraband with 16 Grand Slam winners on the draw. Nine of them are in the lower part, a portion in which between Halep, Osaka, Serena, Kvitova and Muguruza it is difficult even to hypothesize the names of the two semi-finalists. The upper part, on the other hand, seems designed to put Ashleigh Barty on the ball with all the care due to the world number 1 doing the honors. The 24-year-old from Queensland will find Kovinic in the first round and a possible derby in the second with Gavrilova. Then between the Australian and the first slam final on friendly tack there would be a fourth with Karolina Pliskova and a semi with Svitolina, Azarenka or Kenin.
