Berlin (dpa) - The psychologist Simon Hahnzog expects the Corona crisis to bring about a change in what is known as presenterism in the world of work.

This means that someone goes to work (is present) even though he or she is sick.

"Up to now, presenterism has accounted for around two thirds of all illness-related follow-up costs," says the expert on healthy work.

"This enormous economic damage is likely to be less in the near future, because nobody wants colleagues to come to work sick - or they are simply not allowed to."

In addition to real illness with staying at home and presenteeism, there is also so-called absenteeism (of being absent) - in other words: those who take sick leave even though they are healthy.

Hahnzog is skeptical as to whether old norms such as “If you are really performance-oriented and professional, you also go to work sick” or “If you take sick leave, you are lazy” are a thing of the past.

"That would be better, however - both for the efficiency of our economy and for its sustainable and crisis-proof development," says the psychologist.

With regard to the economy in general, Hahnzog hopes that the subject of “health” will remain more than just lip service from companies.

"I no longer have to explain to anyone that there is a certain connection between the health of employees and the economic health of a company."

The psychologist estimates that not all of them will put this knowledge into practice, but it can be assumed that only those companies in at least economically strong developing countries such as Germany will still exist in ten to 15 years, the "healthy work" as one of the implement central strategy elements.
