Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser (CDU) expects more floods on the Rhine in the future.

"The climate models show that the extreme weather events are increasing - this also applies to the winter precipitation, which is the cause of the floods," said the minister of the Düsseldorf "Rheinische Post" (Friday edition).

Therefore, the risk of flooding generally increases.

The current floods are moderate and occur about every two to five years.

"But we have to be prepared for the fact that this will haunt us more often in the future," said Heinen-Esser.

Basically, the flood protection in NRW is sufficient.

According to her, there are a total of 370 kilometers of dykes on the Rhine.

The 90 kilometers in Cologne correspond to 95 percent of the generally recognized rules of technology.

A dike renovation program is underway for the 280 kilometers in the Düsseldorf administrative region, which will last until at least 2025.

The state currently spends around 80 million euros a year on flood protection.
